Eight Quick Money-Saving Tips

It’s always wise to have our piggy banks stuffed for a rainy day. However, it may be difficult to know how to save for an upcoming trip, or last minute emergencies to the mechanic or vet. Sometimes all it takes is that first step in the right direction. Following even one of these tips from Bank of the Lowcountry can help lift the burden of paying those unexpected expenses.

1)   Create a goal for your savings

This tip may be one of the most crucial ones on this list; determining what you are saving for. Whether the goal is buying a new car or going on a vacation, setting a goal will help you keep your eye on the prize.

2)   Start a savings jar

This tip can be tweaked to your preference. Depending how much and how quickly you want to save money will help create your savings jar. If you are looking for quick savings, you can place $20 to $30 a week in your savings jar for two to three months.  If you are looking for long term savings, you can watch your money grow by placing your ones and fives in a jar for a year.

3)   Stuff your stocking for the year

You will be left pleasantly surprised with this tip throughout the year. Prepare your family for the year by stuffing their stockings with razors, tooth paste and other personal needs. This tip will not only save you money throughout the year, but also minimize your time at the store.

4)   Switch to generic

If your wallet is in a pinch, try switching to generic products. Most name brand items are the same quality of the generic brands. Swap out your Bounty and Charmin with your local store’s brand and you’ll see a difference in your monthly budget.

5)   Declutter and sell your things

Stop collecting and start selling unnecessary items. This tip allows you to kill two birds with one stone. You can make your home more spacious and organized and make money off the things you no longer have use for.

6)   Bring your lunch to work

Preparing to save will always work in your favor. Utilizing this tip even twice a week will lead to quick savings. Opt out of ordering delivery to the office by bringing your own lunch with you.

7)   Prepare for your grocery trip

Write a list and stick to it. Not only will this tip help you save money, but it will also save you time and keep your organized. First, write down all your grocery needs. Second, research the prices for each item on your list at your local store. This will also include clipping all coupons. By the end of this step, you will know exactly how much you will have developed a budget for your trip. Third, and most importantly, stick to the allotted budget and list.

8)   Embrace leftovers

There’s nothing cheaper than eating leftovers. Get creative with a few techniques. for example, make extra portions of your dinner to get you through another meal or two that week. Turn that chicken from dinner into a savory chicken salad for lunch. You can often end up with something surprisingly delicious.
