Celebrating Memorial Day on a Budget

Celebrating Memorial Day on a Budget

Memorial Day weekend is an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of our soldiers while spending meaningful time with family and friends. Unfortunately, the lavish vacations and parties the three-day weekend is known for can oftentimes rack up enormous expenses, leaving you broke by the beginning of summer. Make your Memorial Day Weekend fun and affordable with these five ideas.

Throw a potluck party

For a budget-friendly Memorial Day party, ask friends and family to bring drinks, snacks, food, and dessert instead of buying them all yourself. Suggest an inexpensive (but still delicious) menu featuring hot dogs, chili, vegetable dip, and chips. Simply asking your party goers to B.Y.O.B will halve the costs of your party, since alcohol is often one of the largest expenses.

Visit a national cemetery or military attraction

Take time this weekend to reflect on the struggles and sacrifices America’s soldiers have endured for freedom. If a national cemetery or military attraction is located nearby, bring the kids and go for an educational and a relatively low-cost day trip.

Get back to nature

As the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day weekend is the perfect opportunity to spend some time outdoors. Plan a camping trip or a day exploring a local park or waterfall. Hiking and fishing will help you and your family get exercise and have fun at virtually no cost.

Attend a music festival

Check your local listings for music festivals happening nearby. Most festivals offer free or inexpensive tickets and are usually family-friendly events. A festival is an enjoyable way to spend your Saturday and is the perfect opportunity to appreciate musical talent and meet new people without breaking the bank.

Watch a parade

In some cities, parades are a Memorial Day weekend essential. Both children and adults can enjoy a fun parade which is often completely free to attend. If you live in the Washington, D.C. area, you can go to the famous National Memorial Day parade, or watch it at home on TV if it’s too far from your location.
