Hit the outdoors

If you are located by Bank of the Lowcountry, we have a favorite! The Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary is South Carolina’s newest nature-based attraction. Located just 3 minutes from I-95, this getaway is great for everything from hiking, biking, birdwatching, and canoeing. Learn about the Lowcountry’s history and culture without having to spend money on entrance fees. On the plus side, your family will be getting the exercise it needs!

Join a sports team

Your little ones can try almost every activity under the sun, but making new friends over summer break while trying a new sport is a fun! Search around for local teams and pricing. This can be an affordable and healthy way for them to spend their time.

Check out local attractions

Many local children’s museums, zoos, and aquariums offer summer discounts on admission costs. Although a season pass maybe costly upfront, it can save money in the end if you are a current visitor. A pass to the local county park is a great way to join in on multiple activities at a low cost. Some attractions have days that are half-price or offer a discounted entrance fee for arriving later in the day.

Learn a new skill

According to The Southeast Outlook, “go to a Home Depot Kids Workshop on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m.-noon. Possible projects include making a toolbox, a birdhouse, a truck or firetruck. These workshops are designed for ages 5-12.”

See free movies

Most movie theaters across the country offer free movies on certain summer days. This idea is perfect for a rainy, summer afternoon. Check your local theaters for upcoming dates.

Game day

Not everyday is going to be full of warm sunshine. Puzzles and games are a great way to spend a rainy day together. Challenge your kids to a word search puzzle or brain teaser. You can find lists online and print them out each day or weekly.

Go out to dinner

Looking for something that makes you happy, too? Check out your local paper, or online, for a list of places offering nightly discounts and specials. There are plenty of “kids eat for free” offers that will give you quality time with you children, and a break from the kitchen.

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to stay busy over the summer season. Get moving and check out what your city or town has to offer. There is no need to break the bank, or maybe even spend a dime, to have fun building summer memories with your family!
